🌪️ Hong Kong Wind Monitor

Purpose

This dashboard compares calculated typhoon signals based on real-time wind measurements from 30 Hong Kong Observatory stations against the official signals issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

Methodology

• Data Collection: Real-time wind speed and gust data from 30 HKO automatic weather stations, updated every 10 minutes
• Signal Calculation: Using HKO's own criteria - when 15 or more stations (half) record sustained winds ≥41 km/h or gusts ≥70 km/h, our system calculates "Signal 3"
• Signal 8 Threshold: When 15 or more stations record sustained winds ≥88 km/h or gusts ≥180 km/h
• Comparison: Track matches and mismatches between calculated and official signals to understand timing differences

This analysis helps understand:

• How quickly meteorological conditions meet technical signal criteria
• Timing differences between measurable wind conditions and official signal announcements
• The relationship between automated calculations and human meteorological judgment

Note: Official signals consider additional factors beyond wind speed, including storm trajectory, expected duration, and public safety timing.
